This is a generous move that nears financial suicide.
So if you're interested in trying out a game, can't afford it, and don't want to contribute to Meghan's pending bankruptcy, then here's some suggestions: https://twitter.com/meghanlynnFTW/status/1273590278138605569
Point your browser to @DriveThruRPG and look at their Free Stuff button and/or Pay What You Want.

Look at:
Fate Core
Ironsworn
The Void
Demon: the Descent quick start
Mage: the Ascension 20th Anniversary quick start
13th Age System Reference Document

Have a look around.
Head over to One Seven Design and check out the wonderful games by @john_harper

Specifically, download Lady Blackbird
If you're worried about spending a bunch of money on something that you don't know if you'll like, then good news!

There are loads of Quick Start packs with exist expressly to show you how good a game is. If you've downloaded the D&D Basic Rules, then that's what it is.
Again, DTRPG has shed loads of these, and publishers also have them linked to their sites.
Have a look at Powered by the Apocalypse, which has links to many and varied PbtA games, many of which are free.
(PbtA link here... For some reason my app froze)

When they're open again, FLGS often have a second hand section. Go rooting through those tubs. Treasure awaits
If you know someone with a RPG collection, then politely ask if you can borrow a book. Make sure you return it and in the condition you got it.
Another idea: sign up to playtest a game.
Some are easy enough to get onto, others you need to know a guy.
I've playtested games for @PelgranePress and @MonteCookGames
It's fun, your name goes in the finished book and you get a free copy of a game (no art and unformatted though)
This thread is in no way exhaustive. I will have missed excellent games, and excellent writers and publishers. Hopefully it'll give people a leg up.
I think D&D is an excellent place to start in the hobby, and I don't think it's the end of the world if someone stays there.
If someone wants to try something else, then hopefully they'll be able to find something that interests them in this thread.
Which is quite lopsided now.
More than happy to froth about any games with people if you have something you enjoy
And if anyone does try one of these games or publishers because of this thread, then I would *love* to hear about it.
I'm not expecting a flood of replies, but it would be nice
Example: I totally meant to mention @gshowitt and his excellent games, like Honey Heist, The Witch is Dead, Jason Statham's Big Vacation
Many are 1 page long, many are free or PWYW.
Give them a go
