Today, Green Party members vote on a Programme for Government.

I’m very proud of the deal we’ve secured. Here’s some of the policies I’m excited about.

1) 7% average annual reduction in emissions. If we implement this Programme for Government, we can meet our emissions targets. We may not get this chance again.

2) A Climate Change Act within 100 days, putting environmental action at the heart of everything government does.

3) Ending Direct Provision. We’ve secured the funding and the roadmap to make this happen, as well as a commitment to improve conditions as we dismantle DP.

4) Recognition of undocumented migrants. People who have made their life here live in fear of deportation. Campaigners have been asking for this for decades. We can make it happen.

5) National Recovery Fund: the economy has taken a huge hit this year. The PfG commits to a stimulus package rooted in climate action that will help get the economy going again.

6) Retrofitting. Part of the stimulus will be a huge focus on retrofitting 500,000 homes, lowering emissions and giving people warmer homes at lower cost.

7) A seismic shift in transport. €360m every year for walking and cycling. A mandate to local authorities to review their cycling/walking infrastructure.

8) 50,000 new public homes. A referendum on a right to housing. A cost rental scheme.

9) A Citizen’s Assembly on Addiction and Drugs – a chance to radically change our approach to addiction, rooted in humanity and harm reduction.

10) A complete overhaul of our approach to energy, including an offshore wind energy production plan to produce 10x what we currently use and link into super grid.

11) A ban on the import of fracked gas.

12) A new National Anti-Racism Strategy. Ireland hasn’t had one since 2008.

13) A post-covid stimulus package for arts, who have been so central to keep us all going through the covid crisis.

14) A new National Land Use Plan. We can lead on a complete change to stewardship of our land.

15) There’s a huge amount more in there.

No deal can deliver everything we want, but this gives us radical change in climate, transport, human rights and much else.
