One reason the Scottish government has been sounding a little confused recently is that there has been a marked shift in policy on coronavirus - broadly from managing it to eradicating it. Thread 1/5
/5 This is how the National Clinical Director, Jason Leitch, presented the strategy in March 18th.
/5 This is not "herd immunity" but it reflects the consensus on SAGE that trying to eliminate the virus would simply generate a second wave. Recently, Sturgeon has been listening to the high-profile Professor of Global Public Health, @devisridhar of Edinburgh University.
/5 Ms Sridhar thinks the UK approach was based on misguided "British exceptionalism" - an arrogant assumption that we knew better than other countries and could take it on the chin. https://twitter.com/devisridhar/status/1270962789494947840
/5 Elimination is much tougher than just 'living with it'. It means stricter social distancing to squeeze the virus out of the population before reopening the schools. Plus - it's not clear you can eliminate the virus without border controls if England is still chinning it.
