I hope you understand now what we mean when we refer to things as systemic. It takes more that being a rapist to get away with rape. D'banj may be the accused, but in order for this entire journey to have occurred, from the incident to now, required everybody to play their part:
It needs the team around him scouting & trying to recruit girls. It needs someone to give them her info after she said no. It needs a hotel employee to grant him access into her room. It needs everyone who knew what happened that night to turn a blind eye.
It needs celebrity culture who turns humans into untouchable entitled demi-gods. It needs a society that shames women into silence especially when they are the victims. It needs a thriving rape culture that saddles with the accused especially when they are powerful men.
It needs an unreliable justice system where rape is hardly ever convicted, and police that can be bought by the highest bidder. It needs a country where the social contract is broken beyond repair. It needs a man who knows his privilege and knows how to use it
It needs handlers, lawyers, yes men, entourages, and people who have long since sold their soul to the highest bidder. It needs those who trivialize, mock, and even insult the victim and those who are trying to help a young woman not be bullied by the system.
It needs SILENCE: Silence from those who know she isn't lying but wont speak up, silence from those who can publicly condemn his actions, silence from those can use their access to money and power to enact change, silence from those 'who do not want to get involved'.
It needs those who continue to patronize, buy, work with, follow, amplify their voices. Those who will continue to make them richer and more powerful so they continue to get away with violating women. Those who claim to stand against rape but wont stand against rapists.
