Was reminded just now of when I was a rabbinical student & got pickpocketed in a cafe in Jerusalem &, panicked, I ran to the waiter and said the only thing I could think of, which made total sense in the 4th c. Aramaic context of the Talmud discussion I learned it from and +
In modern Hebrew translated to, “I lack pockets!!!!!”

The waiter watched me flail for a second and then asked, in English, if I had lost my wallet. I sheepishly nodded. Then he reminded me of the modern Hebrew word for wallet, which of course I knew.
By the time I got back to my apartment to cancel the credit card I discovered that the theives had already had themselves a very impressive night. Ah well.

But yeah, learning a language can be fraught with embarrassment. It’s ok. Mistakes are ok.
