I just flew round trip from Houston to DC on @united. Let me tell you all about it. This was for work. Please don't fly if you don't need to. 1/
Before flying I got a face shield, KN95 masks, and a copper hand tool from @greenwaybarista to avoid touching things: https://blacksmithhoustonshop.com/products/feza-charm 2/
I put my KN95 on before walking into the airport and never took it off until I got to my destination. Thanks to @Clear I never had to take it off, even for security. 3/
Check in and the terminal at @iah was eerily empty. Most terminal stores and many restaurants were closed. Don't plan on eating or buying anything! 4/
Most @united clubs are closed, with only Terminal E open at @IAH. There is no food service, and coffee is only available behind the bar. They have relaxed food rules to bring stuff in, but many eateries are closed so🤷🏾‍♂️. It again, was completely empty. 5/
Boarding on @united is by row on flights, with the only exemptions for disability, Global Services, and 1K. Passengers are told not to line up. They are also told they need a mask to board. Procedure masks are handed to passengers without a mask. 6/
On the plane a @united FA hands every passenger @PURELL wipes. Generally, economy seats have the middle open, while most 1st class seats are occupied. Food service is through fully packaged snack boxes or sealed cans/bottle for beverages, although the FA still opens beverages. 7/
Upon landing the @united FA manages exit by row, telling which passengers to stand up and when in groups of 3 starting from the front. "Rows 1-3 can stand up now to exit" United Express does not follow this procedure though. 8/
Upon landing at @Reagan_Airport I noticed the same emptiness and closed stores. 9/
I went home via @Dulles_Airport and it was also very empty. the east security line was closed but there were no lines at the only security line open. 10/
I paid to upgrade my seat home on @united because I saw an open seat next to it, but a deadheading pilot went ahead and took it 🤷🏾‍♂️. Also, all passengers have a mask when boarding, but that doesn't mean they are wearing them correctly (see the pax on the right). 11/
Also, there were two open first class seats across the aisle, but the @united FA says a new rule requires they keep two open contiguous seats in case *unaudible* crew rest. The explanation was pretty vague. TLDR I couldn't sit there. 🤷🏾‍ 12/
I got back to IAH safe and symptom free. I definitely wouldn't fly for leisure right now, but the process seems safer than the old way. @united could tweak a few things to make this better though. Mask instructions, pax spacing, keeping cans sealed, etc, but they are trying 13/13
