Crikey, so many dumb ideas in one tweet I barely know where to start
The point is that SPECIALISATION leading to INCREASED PRODUCTION to encourage greater CONSUMPTION at lower prices clashes head on with ecology and wrecked your landscapes, and you want to export that here https://twitter.com/mrrbourne/status/1273581183285288960">https://twitter.com/mrrbourne...

We know (and you’d know if you knew even a little bit of ecology) that specialisation is a disaster for ecosystems
And entirely unsustainable
Europe has plenty of flaws, but it has regulated much more on animal welfare and environmental issues - and we don’t want to lose that

The point of food production is more than producing a lot of cheap food that tastes OK to you
It has to be produced in ways that are safe, don’t wreck soil or ecosystems, with high welfare standards, no nasty inputs, and in ways that minimise negative externalities...

I’m not bothered about you having cheap pulled pork and being indifferent to anything but cost and taste - that’s your choice
But when you want to deregulate our food and farming system I do mind - it exports your indifference and your farming system with all its faults

Consuming is both necessary and fun
But it isn’t the whole point of human civilisation
We need food and farming systems that are sustainable, robust and resilient and which fit local ecosystems
We also need food and farming systems that reflect our ethics and beliefs
