Former KGB agent and propagandist Yuri Bezmenov describes how the Soviet Union effectively used Ideological subversion during the cold war to completely alter the mind and state of an entire generation of people to their benefit. It is described as such:

The four stages of ideological subversion are as follows:

1-Demoralization: (15-20 years), the time it takes to educate one generation in a new ideology, to lay the groundwork for the infiltration of institutions shaping public opinion. When the step is done, facts will mean nothing to them, only their perception of reality.

2-Destabilization: (2-5 years) destabilize the economy, foreign relations and defense systems. Sleepers from stage 1 are now entering leadership positions and becoming politically active.

3- Crisis: (~6 weeks) Due to confusion and the inability to cohere around a common narrative, legitimate bodies of power can no longer function. Subversives focus on installing artificial bodies of non-elected committees as self-appointed arbiters of public opinion. (6/?)

4- Normalization: (indefinite) The revolution is over. Newly self-appointed rulers discard useful idiots and stabilize the country by force to exploit the victory. (7/?)
