Lots of talk about suburban families installing pools this summer given COVID 19. Today on @TheTakeaway we talk about the kids and families who *CAN'T* afford a pool, and who will be shut out of summer youth employment and other activities.
I started working at 14 yo as an investment bank clerk. That wasn't play money I earned, that was money I used to buy myself clothes and lunch so I could go to work.
Kids who live in crowded, hot apartments in a dense city who suddenly DONT have beach or pool or job access will be most severely affected by these cuts.
I mean, if you can afford an in ground pool - thats great., But lets shift this conversation to those who will be left behind this summer with no where to go.
Think about parents who are going back to work, using public transportation, making min wage and now will have no place for their kids to go. Also raises issues of food insecurity and childcare.
