This Day in AHSAA History (1950) -- DON KENNINGTON WINS FIRST FUTURE MASTERS AT DOTHAN: Local golfer Don Kennington of Dothan High School was the winner of the first annual Future Master Golf Championships held at Dothan Country Club in 1950. The unique junior golf tournament has
been a starting point for many of the AHSAA’s high school golf participants and is considered one of the proving grounds for many of America’s top junior golfers.
The youth tournament came just one year after the AHSAA held its first state golf championship, which was won by
A.G. Parrish High School of Selma. The individual champion from the match play in the championship round was Charles Rackley of Dothan High School, who defeated Julian Strassburger 2-1. Strassburger, of Sidney Lanier, had the lowest round (74) to earn low medalist honors.
Like the AHSAA State Golf Championships, the Future Masters has been a mainstay of youth golf ever since.
An impressive list of golfing greats from Alabama and the nation who have competed in the tournament continues to grow and includes past U.S. Open Champions Hubert Green
(Shades Valley High School) and Jerry Pate; Masters Winner Larry Mize; PGA Champions Bob Tway, Mark Brooks; British Open Winner Ben Curtis; along with Tour stars Mac McClendon and Buddy Gardner (both from Lee-Montgomery High School), Stewart Cink (Bradshaw High School),;
Andy Bean, Bruce Leitzke, Bill Rogers, Allen Miller, Eddie Pierce, Steve Melnyk, Joey Hager, Wayne Player, Phil Hancock, Gary Koch, Hal Sutton, Chris Couch, David Jackson, Chip Beck, Curtis Strange, Steve Lowery, David Duval, Vance Veazey, Birney Baird, Robert Floyd, Bubba
Dickerson, Charles Howell III, and Casey Whittenburg.
