katsuki bakugou is one of the most misinterpreted & hated on character in boku no hero academia.
but here's a thread to explain why he became the way he is, and how you're missing the point of his character. [

bakugou is a loud, crude, kid who used to bully midoriya when they were kids. he has a rough personality. but the thing is, why? how did he became like this, at 16 years old?
it all comes down to his childhood.
at the age of four, his quirk manifested in school, and the people around him, including his teachers & his classmates, were all in awe.
they praised him. they told him that he'd "SURELY be a great hero" because of this.

this was how it always was. bakugou was always, always praised by everyone around him. and that's the thing about praise.
when given to someone all the time,
it can go to your head.
and go to his head it did. for various types of ways.

(1) superiority.
(2) it made him think that this was the only way he could keep his value
(3) this made him hungry for validation
(4) be good at everything.
(5) and being good means YOU have to do it. with no help. because you're supposed yo be strong

that is why the idea of midoriya's kindness was so infuriating to him. even though midoriya looked up to him and only wanted to help him.
he sees it as midoriya's way of looking down on him. it was messed up, and i am not saying that bakugou bullying midoriya is okay.

++(so im just gonna add that he really needs to apologize! and hori addressed this topic too so i think he really will and im looking forward to it FUCK yes own up to your mistakes)
enter the sludge villain accident! :) ofc I won't forget that. just. nothing in particular cuz haha he was 14 you know and he almost died because he was literally kidnapped and hostaged in the streets. and he wasn't able to do anything to save himself.
what was that again? what did his teachers say he'll be? a great hero?
but almost died. without even having the chance to take a step towards that yet.

anyways. things became worse when he entered UA.
a prestigious school full of people with potential. people his level, and possibly even higher. people he needs to compete with.
you have to understand how shitty this feels.

you were told you were so great your whole life and that you were special but then when you go to the one place you know you would be your stepping stone to greatness, you realize yourself that these people are on a different caliber than what you were used to
(nah, you're actually not. you're only good because the people you were with were... meh. this is a different place, kid)
also also can i add that people in the entrance exam recognized him as the victim of the sludge villain accident? nothing just reminding yall

(tw// bcs he was almost going into a p@nic att*ck here)
and to add to this, he suddenly finds out midoriya!!!!!!! the quirkless kid he knew all his life...... isn't really quirkless? why? why would he not fight him all these time then? why did he hide it? and midoriya also WON

imagine that. imagine how looked down upon he must have felt. how confused and angry and betrayed and so many other emotions.
and to top it all, he didn't have any friends he can use to vent it out on. the frustration and confusion? he was a teenager. he needed that.

the UA sports festival. remember when he admitted back then that he realized he can't beat todoroki? and then midoriya fought todoroki and he overheard their conversation that no matter what todoroki won't use his fire against anyone in a fight because of his father?
bakugou understood that part. he understood it but nevertheless, todoroki... used his fire on midoriya. and midoriya lost. which meant, to prove himself again, he should win against todoroki. in a fair fight. with all he has, and with all todoroki has.
but bakugou had no way of knowing what was going on inside todoroki's head that time like we did.
and so when they fought and todoroki didn't use fire against him it drove him mad.
he used fire against midoriya. why didn't he use it on me? did he see midoriya as a threat?
and so when they fought and todoroki didn't use fire against him it drove him mad.

and threat enough to use everything he has on him? and not him? what about him?
imagine. how. he. felt. ( also i wanna add that there was a flashback on the beginning of the ep to imply that this was bakugou's chance to prove himself

and then bakugou was kidnapped by villains. and he wasn't able to avoid that. because of this all might had to come and rescue him.
and this resulted to all might's downfall.
and this resulted to all might's downfall.
all might, his idol. the one he always looked up to. the one he wanted to be like. the one he wanted to surpass. his standard. his role model.
all might lost the remaining of his quirk, and it was all because he was kidnapped. because he was weak enough to be captured.
all might lost the remaining of his quirk, and it was all because he was kidnapped. because he was weak enough to be captured.
and of course this wasn't the logical way of thinking. this was not how he should have thought about the whole situation but this was what was all playing inside his head. he was blaming himself.
and he finally broke. because there is only so much you can handle.
he needed to release everything he was keeping inside, and he did it the only way he knew how; fighting.
and midoriya actually understood that.
he needed to release everything he was keeping inside, and he did it the only way he knew how; fighting.
and midoriya actually understood that.
his words in this fight meant so much. because it finally unveiled how katsuki bakugou is also just a human. he was crushed by people's expectations, and he could only take so much.
what broke me the most was how vulnerable he sounded like (thank u nobuhiko) and how he said he couldn't get it out of his head, and that he didn't know what he was supposed to do.
because bakugou always knew his way around things. he knew what he was supposed to do in most situations and he catched up on a lot of hints and shits.
but this time, he didn't have anything.
he was clueless of what he can do to make it go away. because it was too much.
but this time, he didn't have anything.

that's why im so glad that all might understood this and talked to him about it, and how midoriya and he now became proper rivals. i don't know but i just think this was very important where he said that this was brought by the lack of adult supervision and mental health care.
what's beautiful about this, is how bakugou keeps on changing slowly yet surely.
Bakugou's " i will win " that turned into "we will win"
Bakugou's " i will win " that turned into "we will win"
do i have to explain how his advice to the kid was a lesson he learned? yeah? from how he always treated izuku?
and these small things where he finally chooses to open up, and be with people while enjoying himself
bakugou is constantly improving. he is learning and his insults are becoming empty. he's mingling with other people.
and i am sure that this way, he will soon come to realize that his worth is not based on if he is winning, or not.
and i am sure that this way, he will soon come to realize that his worth is not based on if he is winning, or not.
although i cannot imagine him as bakugou if he is not competitive as fuck, i hope he realizes that this is not the only value in life.
the 14 yr old boy we saw from the beginning would be someone who is very different from what we will have at the end.
one would be a kid was of a terrible character, and the other who now knows his worth and the joy of friendship.

and that's what i am here for.
to watch him grow into a troubled boy into a hero that he always aspired to be.
