1. I was skeptical about the Green Party entering talks with FF/FG but always said I would support a transformative programme for government. Having read and reread the document, I know I cannot in good conscience support the deal. I feel it will not ensure a just transition.
2. Yes, the climate crisis is urgent, yet our responses to it must be enduring. We achieve this by embedding justice into the transformation before us. We must ensure people do not face hardship due to climate measures. We need climate policy that respects the dignity of all.
3. Viewed through this lens, it is disappointing to see the PfG framed as a Green New Deal. A GND recognises that climate action must tackle inequality - in housing, healthcare, work conditions, agriculture - in order to succeed. From my reading, the PfG does not achieve this.
4. Particularly concerning is the carbon tax increases proposed by the PfG which do not include the Green Party's fee and dividend model. We do not have sufficient information on energy poverty in Ireland but we have the worst record for excess deaths due to cold homes in the EU.
5. I have the upmost respect for the negotiation team that worked so hard to eke out all they could get in difficult negotiations. We are all concerned about the immediate future, and tackling climate change. However I feel we need a greater focus on justice to get both right.
