One of the ways I think American values have changed is that there was once a strong taboo against doing something that would cause someone else to lose their job. There's not anymore.
As a kid I can remember hearing adults say things like, "I was annoyed the grocery bagger broke a couple of my eggs but I didn't say anything -- I wouldn't want him to lose his job."
There's an All in the Family episode when Archie Bunker finds out a schoolteacher is a lesbian. His wife Edith Bunker tells him to keep it a secret because gay teachers get fired. Archie agrees: "I don't want anyone to lose their job."
Even bigoted old Archie Bunker had a line he wouldn't cross, and that line was causing someone to lose her job. Today, people gladly cross that line. I saw a newspaper tweet a questionable headline and get 50 replies like, "Whoever wrote this headline should be fired!"
I'm not sure how or why this value changed, but I don't think it's a good thing. We shouldn't have a cavalier attitude about costing people their livelihoods.
