So there was a story earlier today about a private school in Nashville that was ending "George Washington Day". My initial reaction was that this was obviously wrong, seeing as he's the father of our country and a hero, but some students of the school have clarified matters.
Apparently, "George Washington Day" consisted of little more than girls (it's an all-girls school) dressing up in male Colonial period dress and attending a dance. Some indicated this wasn't quite so popular among the students themselves (it does sound like a bit of a chore).
They're understandably angry about the bile being sent their way by many people who revere Washington & were aghast at the story and how it was presented. For myself, I have nothing against the students or the school. I do wish they had found another way to celebrate ol' George.
Get rid of the weird dress-up and dance routine and have a parade or a feast or whatever. Our Founding Fathers needn't be worshiped. They were but flawed human beings, as we all are. However, despite their faults, they also sacrificed and fought to create this country.
And that should be celebrated and appreciated. If the school is not teaching its students THAT, then it is doing them a great disservice.
