🧵 Did you know? In the US, #FathersDay was created out of grief 💜

Here's the story... ⬇️

#Thread
On 6th December 1907, over 360 men died in the country’s worst mining accident. 210 of them were fathers 👨‍👦

A young woman called Grace Golden Clayton, who was mourning the death of her father from years before, recognised how many children and widows would now be grieving 💜
And so she suggested to her local church that they dedicate a day to remember all the fathers that had died. She chose the Sunday closest to her Father's birthday, which was 5th July 1908 🌟⛪
It was two years later that the next officially recorded observance of Father's Day took place, also thanks to similar efforts from Sonora Smart Dodd, who had lost her mother during childbirth leaving her father to raise 6 children on his own 🧒
After hearing about Mother's Day, Sonora suggested to her local church that they do a similar day to celebrate all fathers.

News spread quickly, celebrated every year from then on. And in 1972 the day became a nationally recognised federal holiday 🇺🇸
While many of us will be honouring our fathers this #FathersDay , let's not forgot those who will be honouring and remembering those no longer with us.
