my sincere wish is that people would chill the ever-loving heck out about policing the boundaries of identity labels. terms of queer identity are self selected!! they are not concrete facts about a person they are tools for communication... like all language!
words like gay or lesbian are not at risk of being eroded because someone used them to describe themselves in a way that you wouldn't. they will continue to have meaning because that's how words work
if you see someone use a word like "lesbian" in a way that doesn't make sense to you, your response should be to move on. there is literally no way to be a Label Cop that doesn't devolve into harassment because labels describe feelings that are only knowable to the one using them
the idea that our words need to be protected out of fear of people like... pretending to be queer???? pretending to be Your Kind Of Queer When They're Really Not????? has always struck me as not worth thinking about for a microsecond
idk, maybe i just care more about people who don't think they're queer but really are than the reverse. seems to me like those are the folks that have more to lose by self-deputized label police saying your kinsey score must be this tall to ride the gaycoaster
TO SAY ABSOLUTELY NOTHING OF HOW DARK THIS STUFF GETS FOR TRANS FOLKS IN PARTICULAR, WHERE THIS KIND OF GATEKEEPING CAN BE A LIFE OR DEATH STRUGGLE
anyway i have absolutely no idea why the thing that's trending is trending right now and i don't care to look i've just had these thoughts with me for years. if you reply to me trying to argue whatever specific case is involved here i'll know you didn't read the whole thread
