hijikata doesn’t feature much in gudaguda 3, but in the few scenes he does we’re given some really nice perspective on his character. the one that comes to mind first is his interaction with ryouma shown towards the end of the event’s main story. -
hijikata’s naturally stubborn, a trait that’s further augmented by the class he’s summoned into. it’s also a trait that results in his sense of duty, dogmatic outlook on life, and resolve becoming all the more unwavering. -
when fighting, he follows a rigid mentality of “don’t hesitate, keep moving”, and it’s one of the reasons he’s such a nightmare on the battlefield. he’s not the most skilled, but he’s relentless and unpredictable and he doesn’t give others the time to strike him down because he-
pushes forward with a single-minded determination that won’t be halted by almost anything other than dire injury or death itself. -
overall, it’s highly unlikely that he’ll stop before cutting someone down, yet that’s exactly what he does when ryouma mentions okita. -
hijikata rarely truly, deeply cares for anyone or anything, but the few things that he does care for profoundly, he holds onto with a similarly uncompromising tenacity that he holds onto his beliefs with. -
he doesn’t always necessarily understand the people he cares about, as it’s in his nature (as a berserker and as shown from his past actions) to be callous and dismissive of others’ feelings. -
he’ll never be empathetic or sincerely love something enough to break his vows or concede to the error of his ways, but if he cares about something - or in this case someone - almost as strongly as he does his beliefs, this scene shows that he’s willing to compromise on them,
however slightly. -
so, this dialogue is really noteworthy. it’s enough to surprise ryouma - someone who knows him by his reputation as a demon with no care or consideration for anyone else’s plights. -
hijikata’s bull-headed, and callous, and will indiscriminately kill anyone he thinks stands in his way. he’s a man of action, always fighting and moving forward in the direction he alone chooses for himself, but okita’s one of the rare exceptions that will make him pause for a -
brief moment to look back before he keeps raging on.
