Let's be honest: infection outbreaks in German slaughterhouses and farms were very much predictable! It was clear that the horrific working and living conditions would not miraculously become pandemic friendly overnight, and yet seasonal workers were flown in from Eastern Europe.
Hence, it is not shocking that the outbreaks keep happening, but it is shocking that in spite of tons of academic research and practice exposing the brutal reality of migrant workers in these sectors, it took a full blown pandemic for politics and wider public to be no longer
able to entirely ignore the destructive, cruel process through which the food we consume every day is being produced. Capitalist production processes might not change too quickly, but let's start from making the case for the value of so-called “unskilled labor”.
