TRIALS AND TRAGEDIES IN PERSPECTIVE
‘Nike is dead’ I heard my parents say as I tried to make sense of it as a six year old child. A cousin I loved, who was age mates with my younger sister as I was with her older brother. All I was told was that she was sick as we often were,
but this time she died. And for years I questioned it in my mind and couldn’t find answers.
As I matured, I came to understand negligence, carelessness, crime, accidents, illness and other human faults that could lead to tragedies.
Then came my salvation experience and legalism was the order of the day. I was taught that God protects the righteous, heals them, blesses them and only allows evil when they sin.
Every tragedy was rationalized to be a result of a lack of faith, the presence of sin or an operation outside of the Will of God.
However, as I have discovered, the unbelieving get healed at times, sinners get blessed, wrong doers get married and many unrighteous people live long.
Why then does bad things happen to good people? Why are the godly taken in their prime and why do the righteous face difficult trials? I am still asking and still searching despite a few understandings.
Firstly, we live in a fallen world. In Luke 13.1-5, Jesus said the victims of pilate’s thirst for blood and the 18 people who died because the tower of Siloam fell on them were not worse sinners.
Human errors and ungodliness, coupled with natural incidents take people in their prime. Airplanes are made by flawed humans, climate and weather are not always functioning in order as a result of the effect of man’s sin in the beginning.
Secondly, we simply lack all the answers. Deuteronomy 29.29’ says the secret things belong into the Lord. There are times when trials come and tragedy happen and only God knows why. For reasons best known to God, He conceals such information from us
and we would only understand in eternity. Truly, many trials are results of human flaws but not always. What should we them do when they happen?

There is sunshine after the rain. Let me round up by blessing you with an ancient Irish blessing:
May the road rise up to meet you. May the wind be always at your back. May the sun shine warm upon your face; the rains fall soft upon your fields and until we meet again, may God hold you in the palm of His hand.
