All that said, Fighting Games used to be the most popular genre in the entire world. And they provided the foundations for modern esports. I think they can be popular again!
As far as the audience goes, it's incredibly easy to follow fighting games. Whereas I still have no idea what wtf a MOBA is to this day.
A great point others have brought up:
ACCESSIBILTY

Back in the day anyone could scrounge up $1 to go a few rounds at the arcade & spectate many more. Now you have to actually own a console or PC. MOBAs, Battle Royales & FPS are good fits for free 2 play. Fighting games are not.
