I wish westerners could stop saying "LGBT is common knowledge". Not everywhere is like in the US where being LGBT is legal and vocally talked about irl. Here in the east, most of us only have internet and/or fandom as our exposure to LGBT. Here LGBT is often dismissed as

"a western thing that's against our norms and values" and most of us are too afraid to speak up against the homophobic echo chamber. The closest thing from "acceptance" an LGBT Asian/easterner can get is "We won't physically assault you but we will passive-aggresively (2)
side eye you and gaslight you so you feel guilty about your "sin" and you'll willingly change yourself to be "normal" again." There are ignorant people who want to change, and there are internally LGBT-phobic people who still think they're "sick" and/or "sinful". Because we (3)
never had anyone to tell us it's okay to be LGBT. Everyone around us told us that LGBT people are "sinners" and "freaks". Most of us had literally zero exposure to LGBT prior to finding out about it from the internet. Most of us don't have people irl to trust, only internet/ (4)
fandom friends. Most of us only found out about our sexuality via internet/fandom. Westerners need to acknowledge their privilege, and realize that not everyone has what they have. (5)
TL;DR westerners please stop saying that "LGBT is just common knowledge". The world doesn't revolve around you. Please learn that some of us are still learning to understand.
