🧵 As new #nonbinary and #trans trainees enter medicine I feel like sharing some positive moments about my journey of pronoun advocacy. Here are some highlights:
One attending took a student, who had been using the wrong pronouns, to the side after rounds and corrected them.
My senior resident realized a couple days in that she had been using the wrong pronouns and profusely apologized and, more importantly, asked how she can help advocate for me to the team
A few didn’t even bat an eye and gracefully used they/them without a second thought, even with patients.
After I corrected an attending in front of a group (major pit stains after that moment) he came up to me and said- “don’t stop speaking up for yourself” #chills
After standing in an OR hearing the nurse say “it’s so awesome to have an ALL women OR” my senior resident apologized for not speaking up in that moment and recognized how uncomfortable that might have made me
These were the highlights...unfortunately there were many poor experiences as well. But I hope it gives you the hope and courage to keep speaking up!
