Continuing this thread about the duo dynamics within the HxH quaret ( https://twitter.com/KUR0P1KA/status/1273397398774206464) I'll now be focusing on the more underrated relationships within the main group, including my favorite dynamic, Kurapika and Gon's.
Ladies are you ready...because this entire thread was just my excuse to ramble about Kurapika and Gon. I mentioned in the earlier thread Leopika is only the third most thematically important pairing within the quartet. The first being KilluGon, and the second being KuraGon.
And you may be saying "but Rose! They have interactions in literally two arcs!" And to that I say, that's part of why they're so goddamn interesting to analyze! Kurapika and Gon's relationship is the exact opposite of KilluGon's.
While Killua and Gon have similar personalities but divulge into separate paths, Kurapika and Gon are on almost identical paths while having the most contrasting personalities in the quartet. Let's start with the similarities of their emotional downfalls.
Kurapika and Gon have incredibly similar personalities as children. They're stubborn, a bit short-fused; but they have unparalleled compassion for those around them. I'd like to bring up the similarities between KuraPairo and KilluGon, but that's for another thread.
But unfortunately, their lives took a drastic turn upon losing those closest to them. Sure, for Kurapika, it was on a much larger scale, but these losses send them down a path of rage and unmatched lust for revenge.
Both place Nen curses upon themselves, which bring them incredibly close to death. Gon actually learned the concept of a Nen curse from Kurapika, which puts Kurapika's influence on Gon through Chimera Ants into perspective.
Kurapika and Gon, because of these similar paths, have a huge influence on each other regardless of how often they actually interact. The one aspect of their relationship that greatly mirrors KilluGon is how they affect each other.
Kurapika is grounded by Gon. Gon does act as a light for him. When Kurapika was on the edge of losing it, Gon was there to calm him down and reassure him of his true goals. But when Gon was incapacitated, due to Kurapika's influence, Kurapika didn't even visit him.
Gon brings Kurapika to his best, and Kurapika brings Gon to his absolute worst. Gon is warned by Wing to "not emulate Kurapika" even. This is not Kurapika's intention, though. He drives himself away from Gon to protect him. after almost getting Gon k/lled the last time they met.
Kurapika doesn't want Gon to be in harm's way because of him again. He blames himself for Pairo's death, as well as Gon's close call. This explains why he ignores Leorio's calls beyond being edgy and focused on the scarlet eyes.
Before I wrap up this section, I'd like to point out how well Kurapika analyzes Gon. He's very interested in his behavior, and considers him special. He has so much care for Gon and his eccentricity, and doesn't want to diminish it with his presence.
Kurapika and Gon are the only true "protagonists" in my opinion, leading they own storylines that constantly intersect. I have a lot more to ramble about, but I think you get my point. Their dynamic is clever and underrated.
