The "don't learn languages, it's cultural appropriation!" folk are some of the most disrespectful ppl I've seen, to any culture.
They're implying that ppl of non-English-speaking countries all have to learn English to communicate with us, but we shouldn't meet them halfway.
Putting all that time and effort into learning a language to communicate with citizens of other nations on their terms is offensive. But forcing everyone to either learn English or be cut off from international communication is not offensive at all! /s
Or is that culturally appropriating the English language? Am I, as a non-native speaker, appropriating it rn by typing this tweet? Are non-English native speakers appropriating it too?
The problem clearly comes from baby activists who learned about closed cultures and haven't shut up since. Not every culture is closed. Not every aspect of every culture has a spiritual meaning, where partaking in it without a license is akin to blasphemy.
And especially LANGUAGE! It's a part of culture, yeah, and it's also a METHOD OF COMMUNICATION. And the Best part is, I see this shit crop up every damn year, and it's ALWAYS some white saviour shit. Nobody tells you not to learn Russian or Hungarian, bc they're not the poor POC-
- who can't speak for themselves and need twitter users with anime pfps to stand up for them. đŸ„ș Won't somebody PLEASE think of the voiceless non-Americans, the poor dears, who can't even speak for themselves! Oh if only there was a way we could HEAR what they wanted to SAY! đŸ˜©
Oh there is? It's called learning another language?? WILD.
