Hearing a group of almost exclusively white people — a huge number of whom are police or related to police — chant “Blue Lives Matter” in Boston feels like the police equivalent of the Straight Pride Parade. It’s not just a show of support. It’s an aggressive police backed show.
You can’t just take the phrase black lives matter and insert your favorite group of people. The BLM movement isn’t based on the premise that the lives of those in law enforcement don’t matter. It feels as bizarre and misguided as Straight Pride.
Anyone in law enforcement who is teaching their children that the BLM movement is about saying police officers lives don’t matter is delusional and missing the point entirely. You’re doing your kids a huge disservice and you need to find better news sites to read.
There’s a range of people who are protesting right now and holding Black Lives Matter signs. They don’t all agree that ACAB. They don’t all agree that the police should be dismantled or defunded. But they agree that change is needed. And rallying against that is, tbqh, cringe.
You don’t see me holding a white lives matter sign, do you? No. Why not? Because that’s ridiculous. And I’m not a complete idiot.
Also, please don’t tell me this wasn’t an event held by police. The @BostonPatrolmen had a TENT. Just own it. You held a rally in support of yourselves and asked the fire department to swing on by.
God knows I do love the fire department but
And last thing — because why not: it’s worth noting that this was being pushed on social media by members of the Boston police dept. it was also promoted by ... wait for it ... the same geniuses who brought us the straight pride parade.
Last last thing: don’t reply to my tweets ever with the suggestion that anyone should be shot or hurt. I have zero patience for that. You’re an idiot if you do that, and especially so if you do it here.
