First described in 1978 by Clance and Imes, IS is estimated to affect about 70% of people during their life. Many famous, highly accomplished individuals have openly shared their experiences with IS including Michelle Obama, Tom Hanks, and Maya Angelou.

At the core of its definition, people with IS struggle to attribute their success with competence and credit their success to luck or help from others. Setbacks are then associated with professional inadequacy.

Individuals may experience IS in different ways depending on how they define competence. Dr. Valerie Young has explored this in her workshops.

The most widely used scoring system is the Clance IP Scale – a 20 question likert scale assessment to determine impostor feelings/characteristics. Here’s the test to determine your score! 📝
