41.24 ball appears to cross the line
41.57 replay shown which shows ball over the line
42.02 play stops
42.32 play restarts with a Villa free kick
Seems everyone totally trusted the technology... #AVLSHU

Hadn't realised so much time had elapsed here before play restarted.
1 minute 8 seconds for the VAR to realise there might be an issue, with Sky showing clear evidence after 38 secs.
Did the VAR, Paul Tierney, totally trust the tech here and not consider a possible tech error?

Reports that Michael Oliver's watch went off at half-time to signal the Sheffield United goal are inaccurate.
The GLT system was being tested at half-time, for obvious reasons.... so that's why Oliver got a goal signal to the watch during the interval.

Hawk-eye issues to statement and apology which says the goal-line technology didn't work on the Sheffield United "goal" due to the cameras being "significantly occluded by the goalkeeper, defender and goalpost."
First time it has happened in 9,000 matches.

Nonsense from PGMOL on VAR not intervening on Hawk-eye error.
"Under IFAB protocol, the VAR is able to check goal situations, however due to the fact that the on-field match officials did not receive a signal, and the unique nature of that, the VAR did not intervene." #AVLSHU

What the PGMOL statement actually means is:
"Under IFAB protocol, the VAR is able to check goal situations. When the on-field match officials did not receive a signal, the VAR did not do his job properly and made a clear and obvious error."

The key issue here is that the VAR, Paul Tierney, had plenty of time to realise there was a possible error.
He doesn't even have to make the decision in the 1 min and 8 seconds that elapsed - he just has to recognise there is a review incident. And he didn't.

The VAR, Paul Tierney, trusted the Goal Decision System technology implicitly.
The VAR didn't even consider there might have been a problem with GDS. That in itself entirely understandable.
But there was the time and the reason to doubt it, act and score a big win for VAR.
