Some Simple Rules For Reading That I've Found Useful:

(Thread)
1. Read promiscuously.

Some people read one book at a time.

Not me. I belong to the streets. 10 books at a time? I'm in.

This way there's always something I "feel like" reading, no matter my mood.
2. Start fast, quit often.

I will start literally any book that looks remotely useful or interesting.

The bar is low for starting.

But I will quit any book immediately if I feel like it's no longer useful.

The bar is high for continuing.
Many people feel guilt for not finishing a book.

Trust me:

Most books do not need to be read in full.

Get what interests you and then get out.
3. Always have at least one book that makes you feel like a fraud.

Have a book in the queue that counts as "heavy lifting."

A book that makes you feel like you shouldn't be reading it in the first place.

Reading past your pay grade keeps you humble and expands your vision.
4. Always have a book that's just straight up fun.

Reading should be fun.

I feel zero guilt over loving to read about Jack Reacher straight-up murdering people left and right and the inevitably sleeping with anything that moves.

Life is short.
5. Read across disciplines.

Try to read deep in one subjects, but shallowly across a bunch of different subjects as well.

This is "T-Learning" vs. "I-learning" (just going deep in one field).

This enables you to make surprising connections others don't see.
6. Read older stuff.

"The Lindy Effect" - the idea that older material has been vetted across the ages, and so if it survives till today it probably has something of value to say.
Might be overstated in certain circles today, but the "hot new thing" doesn't always stand the test of time.

Look for the books everyone else cites. Look for the books that laid the foundation for the hot new things.
7. Read lavishly.

Books are the only item I do not watch my spending on.

The value proposition is ridiculous. The best of what someone knows for only 20$? A steal in any context.

I spend on books like someone with endless cash.
I spend on everything else very little.
Why?

Because books help me grow.
Growth helps me contribute.
Contribution helps me earn.

The more I read, the wealthier I get..

On every possible level.

Instant return on investment.
