Thread: Demons and Mental Health

1/
Throughout history demons have been described, thought about and considered real.

Djinn, fairies, spirits, devils and shape-shifters are all variants on the theme, their exact form emerging from the context they are found in.
2/
Some of these are benificient, some not.

I don't want to go into folklore, but instead focus on my own thoughts on how these beings manifest in modernity.

3/
Demons have the power to inhabit us -- but only if we allow them.

They must be invited in.

There are two ways this occurs:
- Passively
- Actively

4/
By succumbing to temptation, or acting imorally, we passively accept them into our life.

This occurs to those who behave out of keeping with human's innate 'Godliness.'

Without a religious angle, you can call this 'goodness.'

5/
Actively letting them in requires summoning.

The proverbial 'deal with the devil.'

This bestows great riches in the short-term, but leads to long-term destruction.

6/
The former grants short-term pleasure.

The latter success, fame or fortune.

Both lead to despair.

7/
This occurs due to the way demons attack and pervert our humanity.

8/
Every human is made up of the physical (body), the mental (mind) and the spiritual (soul).

Demons gain access through the mind, and use it to attack the other two.

This is why humans rationalise sub-standard behaviour; it is demons manipulating their psyche.

9/
Another example of demon's using our mind for their own purpose is illustrated by @helioslogos thread on Demons and Technology.

Our thought processes are their avenue of attack.

In modernity, when someone is attacked by demons we see them as mental health problems; anxiety, depression and -- eventually -- suicide.

11/
This ontological frame suggests, as this is a health issue, medication must be the solution.

This is the model of demons -- the mind as king.

12/
Using it, demons remove human focus on the physical and spiritual.

Prescribed drugs further this by switching off the emotions of those who take them, covering the issue, whilst never exorcising the root cause: passive demonic possession.

13/
Hence why medication never solves mental health issues.

It merely masks them.

However, certain behaviours have an excellent effect on loosening the holds of demons on our psyche.

What are they?

Self-improvement.

14/
So let's look at how that works.

One well known alleviator of anxiety and depression is through nutrition and exercise (exorcise?).

By treating your body like a temple, the demon's hold is weakened.

15/
Forgiveness, generosity and acts of kindness make you feel good about yourself, alleviating anxiety and depression.

Why?

Because altruism is spiritual.

Engaging in it weakens a demons hold.

16/
Walking in nature is another proven way to help mental health issues.

Why?

Because seeing the beauty of creation weakens a demon's hold on you.

17/
People who regularly go to places of worship, be it a mosque, church or synagogue report lower incidences of mental health problems.

Demons do not wish to enter holy places, so they get left behind.

Weakening their grip.

18/
Refusing temptation -- be it alcohol, drugs or casual sex -- means acting out of higher ideals, not a base state.

Doing so weakens demonic power over you.

19/
Self-improvement is a vehicle of Godly behaviour.

Whether or not someone has faith, those who are disciplined, do not succumb to temptation, and are focused on developing themselves act congruently with religious values.

20/
As a result, demons cannot exercise the power they desire over you.

21/
Using this model, you can see why mental health issues vanish when people engage in self-improvement.

22/
Those who regularly succumb to temptation and are unable to enact disciplined Godly behaviour fall into malaise as they never exorcise their demons.

Instead, they continually invite them in -- granting permanent residence -- and the fall which evil desires.
