I’ve written in the past about working for an extreme narcissist who was similar to Trump in his sociopathic selfishness but vastly, vastly smarter.
Narcissists build a fragile outer shell. A persona that even they know isn’t real. It is their life’s work to defend it.

They create this hypnotic bubble where acolytes are lulled into serving them even as those acolytes witness one person after another getting abused by the narcissist.
It’s surreal and weird. It’s like being the only person who knows that the mayor is actually a rabid raccoon.

No matter what you say or point out to everyone else, they just keep their head down and keep marching on.
“Don’t you find it weird that he is foaming at the mouth and eats out of the garbage can?”
“Wut? That’s just the way he is.”
“But he is literally a raccoon.”

Eventually though, one by one, those people have sudden, sharp awakenings.
Something happens - usually directed at them - that smacks them out of their spell and they’re like “OMG. He actually IS a rabid raccoon. How did I not see that?”

I’ve always thought that rolling awakening would happen in Trump’s inner circle but it obviously never has.
I mean, Michael Cohen and a few others had their belated epiphanies after being thrown under the bus... but most are still beholden to Trump and loyal.

The public is having an awakening though. Not Trump’s diehards. The people who were onboard less than religiously are having those epiphanies.
Something happens and it shatters the mystique. It’s hard for us to understand as people who always saw through Trump.

It’s like dropping a porcelain doll.
The narcissist’s facade can never be put back together. It is shattered for eternity.
The newly awakened people never go back to that hypnosis again.

If you look at Trump’s numbers, you can see this playing out.
He has around 56% disapproval.
But nearly all of that is “strong disapproval”.
48% strongly disapprove. 8% disapprove.

The things that prompt those awakenings aren’t cumulative.
I know it seems like they should be. After all, if you pile up more and more bad things someone has done, surely that will convince those still hypnotized.
In my experience, it doesn’t work like that.

The awakening comes from one specific thing. One incident. One witnessed event.
The key is to hammer Trump from every angle with specifics of what he has done rather than just repeating, repeating, repeating the same high-level themes.

The good news is that there are now so many ad-makers pumping out negative messages, he is getting hit with breadth and volume.
The wider range of things you share in circles with people even quietly still open to possibly voting for him, the better.

We’re making progress.
We’re pushing the porcelain doll off the shelf.
And every person who suddenly awakens becomes a permanent escapee.

For the reasons above and others, we can help shove that fragile disaster off the mantle by sharing as high a volume negative spots featuring his own words and deeds as possible.
The greater the range of topics, the better.
You may just prompt an awakening among one person.

And once you have, while they likely won’t admit this to you, they’ll suddenly see Trump in a new light and won’t ever go back.
Narcissists can hypnotize people once. They can’t do it twice.
To interrupt it once is to destroy it.
