okay, let us dissect.
J.Cole made a song about how the black community needs to aim to educate one another instead of belittle one another for not being educated and twitter decided that he was insulting Noname and therefore was against the female plight.
Yall are now calling for us to cancel him for criticizing noname's tone?? while I recognise that given the current political climate and the war on women that we're experiencing world wide, the timing was in poor taste...
and that the song will no doubt be used by misogynistic men in order to justify silencing women is certain. BUT I definitely don't think that should be the message that we take from it, especially because that is CLEARLY not his intention.
Noname is vocal about the black struggle and is anti-establishment, anti-capitalist and anti-colonialism(AS SHE SHOULD BE) but we would be remiss to not realise the privilege that comes with being so educated one that doesn't exactly extend to the mass majority of black people.
contrary to what twitter would have you believe, a large amount of black people are not woke -especially not to her level (j.cole admits that he himself isn't) and so I think the message that is meant to be conveyed is that instead of shaming people for not knowing as much ...
, we should be aiming to educate (which I think noname attempts to do with her bookclub). But I think cole is speaking from the point of view of a large majority of black people - being one of recognising an issue that affects them without maybe understanding all of its nuances.
while noname is speaking from the POV of understanding racism as this structure engrained in society. so when she makes comments like the one she did (about rappers being silent on twitter but loud in their music) - the one she deleted. it's counter productive.
i keep saying the Cole song gives me Steve Biko vibes because I feel like he touches on what Biko says about Black Consciousness and how if we do attempt to give freedom to a black population that is still mentally in chains, we will not see the kind of change we expect.
J.cole was out there protesting too, and I don't think It's smart (simply because he addresses these issues in his music) to think that he should pioneer a movement that he is not qualified to pioneer. We shouldn't be looking to artists for answers to CIVIL AND HUMAN issues.
the issue is that 'woke' people are quick to attack others for not protesting or engaging in topics the 'right' way without teaching them what that way is. Activism is personal, and I don't see the need for a divide when you're fighting for the same cause against a common enemy.
so while noname has every right to be angry and to convey that in her tone, as someone who is anti-establishment and anti-capitalist she needs to recognise the privilege that comes with education seeing as it is a capitalist commodity that is bought and sold. And if the message..
the message is meant for black people, I don't think it is too much to ask that it is accessible to black people everywhere.
Gents are saying that "he's making it someone else's responsibility to educate him"

chief... who educated you?????
you didn't pop out the womb educated.

And before yall start, I am a fan of BOTH J Cole and Noname. Neither are above reproach. Cole was wrong in the way he presented the issue but his message was valid.
