#Thread on untold story of 1962 indo-china war

We all know that we lost in 1962 with china. Have you ever thought why we lost to china? An army who have never failed in any operation, how it failed to china, which was considered as weak in 1962?

There is an untold story behind it-

V.K krishna menon who was indian defence minister in 1962. He was very close to nehru.

On October 8, 1959, Lt Gen SPP Thorat , then responsible for Eastern Command, sent a report about the “Chinese Threat on India’s borders is worth citing”,
to the Army chief, who forwarded it to the menon.

Thorat’s findings were outright rejected by Menon and, worse, Thorat was accused of being an “alarmist and a warmonger”.

Before this report, then Army chief gen. Thimayya had warned menon several times regarding the Chinese threat, but menon ignored it. It is also claimed that menon behaviour was not good with the army.

After the rejection of thorat report and the growing border issues with
china, thimayya went to nehru. Initially Nehru showed least interest but when he exchanged angry words with the prime minister, nehru assured him to some action against menon.

Thimayya told Nehru that his arbitrary decision of making NEFA [North-East Frontier Agency] the
responsibility of the army, made public in Parliament, was preposterous and completely against Indian interests. Thimayya felt that Nehru had completely compromised the army. The threat of Thimayya taking over the reins of government, at least in Nehru’s mind, was very real.
Now if Nehru-Menon team have to survive, they had to neutralize Thimayya.

3 days later, Krishna Menon sent for Thimayya in ‘a highly excited state of mind’ and vented his anger at the chief for having approached the prime minister directly, suggesting
instead that the matter should have been resolved at his level. Threatening Thimayya of ‘possible political repercussions. After this Thimayya resigned.

Major @Gen_VKSingh says, “When Thimayya retired in May 1961, it was expected that Thorat would succeed him as the Army chief.
He was highly decorated, had combat experience, and was held in high regard in the service. Most important, he was GOC-in-C Eastern Command, and was familiar with the situation on the borders with China.”

But surprisingly Gen PN Thapar got the top job,
who had very little field experience.

Also, the real reason of departure of Thimayya got leaked in the media.

Chinese took the full advantages of our internal conflicts and attacked us. And after that we all know what had happened.
At the end, menon was asked to take the blame and resign.

Interestingly if you will google these incident, you will find only few things. Thanks to @shivkunalverma sir! Who wrote a tremendous book “1962 the war that wasn’t “ and highlighted the incident.

Many people psychologically think that we can’t defeat china.

Pal! We lost 1962 because of dirty politics, political favouring, not taking action to prepare the army despite of several alerts, not because our troops were weak. And even then they fought brilliantly!
