In the past few weeks, I& #39;ve seen more "the media won& #39;t show this" or "things the media doesn& #39;t want us to see" tweets than usual (which was still, frankly, a lot). I try to DM or reach out when I see close friends do this, but I figured it may be good to do a thread about it.
It& #39;s really easy to say this - it& #39;s even easier to lump every news org, site, paper and publication into "the media" when you probably mean CNN or FOX. I literally cannot stress enough how hurtful this is, and how it can erase the hard work of local/freelance journalists.
A lot of people only consume news they find on their timelines rather than actively reading the paper or going to news sites to read up on current events. If you are only following the NYT, CNN or FOX, odds are you are going to miss out on a lot of local coverage in your area!
For example, here are some to follow in the #Seattle area: @komonews @SeattleRefined (shameless plug) @seattletimes @Crosscut @SeattleMet @Seattlemag @KING5Seattle @KING5Evening @q13 @seattlepi @thenewstribune @TheStranger @KitsapSun @EaterSeattle @KIRO7Seattle @thedaily
I can& #39;t stress enough how important it is to not only follow local publications in your area, but also take the time to find the accounts of their journalists and editors to follow as well. They are the ones on the ground doing the work and reporting for your community.
Here are *just some* I follow in the #Seattle area: @LessIsMoh @meganireneb @mrietmulder @StefanieLoh @lindseywasson @evanbush @asiakmfields @pgcornwell @KellyKOMO4 @florangela @SteveTVNews @blatchfordtr @Yasmeen_Wafai @Gina_Cole_ @bybencassidy @GoldsteinStreet
Being an informed news consumer takes effort - you have to actively find the accounts of journalists who are covering the issues YOU care about, follow them and keep up with their coverage.
If you see something that you haven& #39;t seen in the news, please for the love of all things holy - Google it. Odds are, there& #39;s coverage of it and you can find it easily. Also, click on the profile of the person who posted it - it might be a journalist.
If a publication isn& #39;t covering something and you think they should - send a news tip! Go to their site, find their general email or the contact information of a reporter who covers the issue and reach out with your information! Odds are, you will get a reply.
And finally, please be more careful with the way you use "the media won& #39;t show this" - chances are, it& #39;s just not true. Call people out for it when you see it. Because I& #39;m tired.
Oh, and don& #39;t forget to support local news!! A digital subscription to most publications is usually cheaper than a Netflix subscription or your typical Taco Bell order. It& #39;s worth it - and you have no idea how much it helps!
Also, more journalists to follow because they& #39;re dope: @angelmendoza___ @CassidyQuinn @DomDiFurio @Hello_Destiny @Nataliempate @michaelaroman_ @rachelwalexande @jonathanmbach @brotherly_grub @MelissaKXLY4 @TaylorGrahamTV @KyleKXLY @aaronpolevoi @ktinsleynews
