We’ve run this course before through @helloshape; we feel an obligation to give back to our design community based on what we’ve been given & what we’ve achieved through our privilege. Some of you may listen to our podcast: http://anchor.fm/new-layer ">https://anchor.fm/new-layer...
Our last course gave six students the opportunity to learn or refine product design skills. Four of them currently have roles as product designers, one is a product manager, and one has become a product engineer.

There’s a lot of people offering mentorship and portfolio reviews for Black designers right now, but we wanted to acknowledge that the racial inequity isn’t a temporary fix. Systemic racism has to be addressed at all sorts of levels.
When we look at our tech communities, our attempts to build diverse teams still have abysmal outcomes, with only small percentages of the Black community represented. http://www.wired.com/story/five-years-tech-diversity-reports-little-progress/">https://www.wired.com/story/fiv...
We believe that education is the best counter we can offer to balance teams. We need diversity on our teams. We need the voices of Black people, their experiences and perspectives to design equitable experiences.
We’re both familiar with the concept of assimilation. Neither of us believe we have anything to offer other than what’s been given to us through our own white privilege. We do believe we can offer our experience, both of us with different educational backgrounds and teaching experiences. If you’ve made it to the end, and are interested in applying, please do so here!
