The US is obsessed with personal responsibility for systemic problems that require systemic solutions. You’re supposed to bear the brunt of the problem, take the blame for causing it, and also solve it all on your own.
You’re poor? You didn’t work hard enough
You’re discriminated against? You should have been more polite, dressed better, worked harder
Worried about climate change? Better have NO carbon footprint or you can’t say shit.
Meanwhile those actually responsible have no accountability
Struggling to balance work and parenthood? You shouldn’t have had kids, or your career (depending on what race you are)
Can’t afford healthcare? Should’ve gotten the right job
Can’t afford to retire? Shoulda saved!

It’s a neat way out of corporate or government responsibility
