The origin of the worship of Lord Ganesha can be gathered from ancient Hindu scriptures, the Vedas. Such refrence can be seen in RigVeda with the invocations of Ganpati

नि षु सीद गणपते गणेषु त्वामाहुर्विप्रतमं कवीनाम् । न ऋते त्वत्क्रियते किं चनारे महामर्कं मघवञ्चित्रमर्च ।।
(ऋग्वेद, म.१०, सु.११२,मंत्र०९)
Lord Ganpati..!!! We urge you to vest in the midst of us who praise you. You are intelligent-omniscient among all knowledged ones..

Further we look upon the texts he is also mentioned along with other dietes like Rudra, Shanmukh which is believed to be kartikey.

The names of God mentioned are:
Rudra, Danti, Nandi, Shanmukha, Garuda, Brahma, Vishnu, Narsimha.
We can see the whole first line mentions the name of Shiva family:
i.e,. Rudra, Danti, Nandi, Shanmukh
