A small thread on the significance of parts of Desi culture and why it's ca when people of other cultures wear it.
1. The Bindi. No it's not just a dot. No it's not a third eye in Egyptian or Chinese culture, a bindi is different. It's significance is not limited to representing the third eye, it hold loads of importance in culture and religion
If you do not know the significance, you have no right to appropriate it or justify someone appropriating it. My culture is not your aesthetic.
2. The Maangtika/Mathapatti: This too is not a simple piece of jewelry. The "maang" or the middle part of the hair is of a lot of significance, it's where a married woman wears a sindoor or vermilion to signify her marriage. Hindu women wear it in the middle whereas Muslims
Tend to wear it to the side. In our religious texts, the shola shringaar or bridal ornaments hold a lot of importance and are considered to bring good luck to a bride in her married life. It's not something you can wear as a joke.
3. Mudras aka "hand sings": A mudra; Sanskrit: मुद्रा, IAST: mudrā, "seal", "mark", or "gesture"; is a symbolic or ritual gesture or pose in Hinduism, Jainism and Buddhism.some mudras involve the entire body, most are performed with the hands and fingers.
What y'all call "just hand signs" are actually a very important part of various classical dances in Desi culture. People who practice these hold their dances at a religious importance and devote years of their lives learning from their "guru" and perfecting the art, for them+
Every move, every turn, every gesture, is sacred. Every single move in these dances has a deep symbolism and cultural significance. One requires sacrifice, dedication and pure devotion if you need to learn these dances, first and foremost, respect for the art form. It's not
Just a hand sign that you can do and shake your head to make it an "Indian dance". It's so much more than that. Mocking mudras and hand signs when each of them have a deeper meaning is just plain offensive and ignorant.
4. THE GAYATRI MANTRA: read this thread I've written everything in here https://twitter.com/JinWeLoveYouu/status/1270982139400650752?s=19
So the next time you see a Desi being offended by ca, please listen or educate yourself rather than silencing them and telling them "it's not that deep" cause it is. It's our culture and we have the right to be offended when someone uses it for aesthetics and stereotypes us.
And don't justify by trying to explain us what is our culture and what isn't, please, it's embarrassing. We know what we're talking about, stfu and listen.
Oh and one last thing, both Jainism and Buddhism are both religions which literally originated in India and have their literal roots here, so if you think something is a part of "buddhist" culture then it doesn't make it any less of Desi ca. It is still Desi ca and does not
Excuse anything
And they justify it even when the idol isn't Buddhist 🗿🗿
One more reason is y'all will look like clowns if you wear/do these things https://twitter.com/JinWeLoveYouu/status/1270949754172616704?s=19
Just to clarify the tweets before this, what i meant by the Buddhism originating in India was that some people try to justify desi ca by saying that "it's a Buddhist thing it's not even Indian culture" when we share a lot in common with Buddhist ideologies and practices
So using that to excuse Desi ca is something I don't like and won't accept. Don't take it in the wrong way, I'm aware Buddhism is a very widespread religion in a lot of countries, but saying something is a part of Buddhism to excuse Desi ca when the idol in question isn't even
Buddhist is just excuses at this point
And if 7292920 people are telling that it's ca but you decide to listen to the one mf who says "this isn't ca/this doesn't offend me" for validation and because they hold K-pop above their own culture to prove your point then you're a part of the problem
I ALMOST FORGOT, •MEHENDI/HENNA: this is something that has been around for centuries as a part of our culture, it is worn in cultural and religious ceremonies and the designs hold a lot of significance too. This is of importance in boh Hindu and Islamic traditions
•THE NATH/NATHUNI/NOSE RING: believe it or not, this too is of importance. It's not just a piece of jewelry
I'm aware henna is used in various cultures as well , with the designs differing from culture to culture, but in this thread in particular I was talking about the importance it holds for desis. Regardless, it isn't a part of Korean culture🗿
THE GANESHA STATUE: Ganesha is one of the most important deitys in hinduism. in our religion, while around a gods idol or murti you cant sit on a platform higher than it and absolutely not keep it on the floor. theres always either a pedestal to keep it
or atleast a cloth folded several times under the idol. in bps mv, it was kept on the floor, next to the girls feet while she sat on a throne with her back facing towards the deity. thats why its such a big and unacceptable thing. even if i, as a hindu, were to do that, id get my
a$$ whooped
