Following on from yesterday's #Italia90 tweet, I've dug out some more of my photos from this fantastic trip. My memory is a bit crap, but I've identified 9 matches that we attended in our two weeks there.
We'd arrived in Milan the day the World Cup started, and had a day in that lovely city. We sipped coffee on a cafe pavement with Ron Atkinson and we went to a bank (BNL?) to try our luck in.ordering tickets for matches on our wish list. #Italia90
Then it was off to the small town of Tortona, an hour or so on the train, which we had chosen as our main base for the trip. #Italia90
The first match we went to was on Sunday 10 June at the San Siro, West Germany 🇩🇪 vs Yugoslavia. I think I was too awestruck to take any photos at the match.
The following day, Monday 11 June 1990, 30 years and 4 days ago, we headed into Genoa for #Scotland 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 v #CostaRica 🇨🇷
We didn't have tickets but thought we might be able to get some on the streets. But arriving at the station there were a LOT of Scots there.
We hung around outside the station and we were about to revert to Plan B - find a bar with a big telly - when about 20 minutes before kick off we spotted an excited huddle forming. Tickets! We thrust over some Lire and were given two tickets.
And mine was a Category 1 ticket - top of the range - for about £15. My seat was in the front row of the 'best stand, literally three seats along from a row of Fifa dignitaries.

A excellent seat to witness at close hand the defensive organisation of #Scotland
Final score 1-0 to #CostaRica

The next day was our third live match in 3 consecutive days in three different cities. #Belgium v #SouthKorea in Verona. This was pretty sparsely attended. Choose your own seat, so got down at pitch level to take a pic of a #Belgium goal in a routine 2-0 win. #Italia90
Next game was #Yugoslavia v #Colombia in Bologna. Higuita's goalkeeping antics kept us entertained, but also lots of flags on show inside and outside the ground, and a lovely view from the stadium. #italia90
That takes us to 30 years ago today. Back to the San Siro for #WestGermany v #UnitedArabEmirates but surely this time I wouldn't pay quite so much attention to the surroundings? Cue prolonged biblical lightning once it got dark. Spectacular.
That brings us up to date from 30 years ago. So far 5 matches in 6 days in 4 different stadia. All by train from our base in Tortona. Scores 4-1, 1-0 2-0, 1-0, 5-1. Four more matches to follow on the 30th anniversary of each. #Italia90
#30yearsago Saturday 16 June 1990, and a chance to see #Brazil 🇧🇷 in the flesh in a narrow 1-0 victory over #CostaRica 🇨🇷. Turin the venue, atmosphere fantastic. That's 6 games attended in 7 days. #Italia90 #stamina
Monday 18 June 1990: a long train journey south to Bari (we certainly made the most of our two week Italian rail passes) and this marvellous newly built stadium, rising up like a floral inspired spaceship.

#Italia90
Match was #Cameroon (already guaranteed of progressing after two wins) v #SovietUnion (needing a miracle after two defeats). Result was 4-0 to the Soviets but a draw in the other group match meant they went home. #Italia90
So having been in Bari for a match that finished at about 11pm, we made the 7 hour train journey north to Florence for Austria v U! S! A! on Tue 19 June 1990. Both teams had lost their first two matches and would need a big win to have any chance of progressing. #Italia90
It was badly refereed and therefore became bad tempered. #Austria 🇦🇹 had a man sent off after half an hour for a petulant kick, but fairly comfortably scored twice on the counter attack. Plucky USA 🇺🇸 in their first World Cup for 40 years got a late consolation. #Italia90
USA had won some friends with their fighting display in a 0-1 defeat to Italy, and this tournament was a huge boost to football in America. So despite three straight defeats they were cheered off by their fans (mainly backpackers who were not entirely sure what was going on).
Wed 30 June 1990, #30yearsago today, and the last match of our #Italia90 trip. Back to Genoa for #Sweden v #CostaRica
Sweden had lost their first 2 matches but still had a chance of qualifying. Costa Rica needed just a draw.
#Sweden started strongly and led 1-0 at half time, but this #CostaRica team were no pushovers and equalised with 15 minutes to go. When #Sweden conceded again 3 minutes from time it was all a bit too much for some of their fans. #Italia90
And that concluded our #Italia90 trip. In 11 days we went to 9 matches in 7 different cities involving 14 teams. It was a wonderful experience and the best thing was mixing with football fans from all around the world.
It's been great to share these memories and my photos and thank you to everyone who has made nice comments. #Italia90
