Just checking out some of London’s newer cycle infrastructure... new protection on Grovsner Road by the river is great! Stretches all the way to Chelsea Bridge, in both directions. Junctions could be improved though
Also just been to check out the Oval Triangle, which has had some of its roads closed in just the right places (see map) to make the whole area access-only for cars... the result is a very pleasant network of streets to ride in. The closures are done with planters:
The new Park Lane cycleway is really great - it turns a major artery in central London from a total no-go zone to actually quite a pleasant place to ride
Despite being an emergency thing for coronavirus TfL has gone a good job on the bus stops, with islands and zebras (which isn’t the case in the Grovsner segregation). More of this please!
There was already a cycle path in Hyde park running parallel to Park Lane but it gets VERY busy at commuting time and on a normal day pedestrians (quite reasonably) wander into it without fail as it’s just a bit of paint – bei Hyde Park
We’re supposed to be getting cycle tracks on horrible Euston Road as part of the TfL emergency programme, though no sign of them yet - but it would be fantastic. @willnorman might know a timescale?
Very much still under construction (apart from this nifty turning lane that’s already in use) but the cycle track on Prince of Wales Road in Camden looks really promising. It’ll form part of a near-continuous protected route all the way to Elephant & Castle when it’s done
It’s been around for a few years now but posting it since it’s good, Royal College Street cycle tracks basically showed what could be done with the lighter segregation you’re seeing in these pop-up lanes. Well done @philjones_LDN for getting it built
Broadway Market in Hackney has been made through-motor traffic free and had had its on-street parking removed... and and it’s absolutely glorious. A good missing link in the cycle route across London Fields and Goldsmiths Row as well
New cycle tracks on Queensbridge Road in Hackney that are just about finished - this road is actually closed at the moment so there’s no traffic to protect you from but it looks good, even if it doesn’t connect to much else yet!
Crossing those Queensbridge Road cycle tracks there’s also this pretty nice crossing onto quiet streets, with through motor traffic filtered out by bollards - very good treatment imo
This has been here for a while but for completeness, this end of Goldsmith’s Row in Hackney is car-free and makes a nice route connecting with now pedestrianised Broadway Market and other bits
Here’s a new one: a good chunk of Old Ford Road next to Victoria Park has been closed to motor traffic - I saw some people on here saying this wasn’t very well done but it looks pretty good to me now the planters have been put in – bei Victoria Park
Similar new closure on Gore Road next to Victoria Park, but I think this one only makes this end the street one-way for cars rather than completely closing it
Pretty nice and relatively new (about a year old) cycle tracks on both sides of Wick Road in Hackney - works well!
The cycle track on Lea Bridge road was finished relatively recently and it’s the best scheme I’ve seen all day - it’s a permanent one rather than temporary and it’s great quality and just keeps going out into the suburbs forever
It runs for about 3 miles like that, between the red and blue dots on the map... I gave up when the signs started saying ‘Chingford’ because I live in south London and have to get back...
Whipps Cross junction is nicely done as well
Honestly it just goes on like this for miles, every main road should have this
One thing Waltham Forest has got really right in this scheme is side roads.... lots of filtering motor traffic out, and where they haven’t done that there’s a raised/continuous footway and cycleway over it with priority over the side road
And now on the way home - through motor traffic supposedly banned from St Matthew’s Road in Brixton... but 10 seconds after I took this photo a white van followed me through it, so maybe a bit pointless and better to block the whole thing off
Basic but thoughtful temporary cycleway in Raynes Park, deepest south London
Happy to report that the segregated cycle lane along the Thames has been extended between Vauxhall Bridge and Lambeth Bridge on its way to Parliament - it didn’t go this far when I was here on Monday
New temporary cycle lane on Old Broad Street in the City - only one direction at the moment and cones for protection. Similar one on adjacent Threadneedle St
New permanent protected cycle lane of Baylis Road bear Waterloo (leading into The Cut) - it’s good!
This in new cycle track is in Bermondsey on Jamaica Road - it’s not quite finished or open yet but it looks like it’s going to be really good
This bit near Southwark Park IS open and as you can see is already well used - looks great. It’s going to be part of Cycleway 4 stretching from Bermondsey to Greenwich
Nice move by Lambeth Council, who seem to have removed a chicane for cycling and replaced it with planters - much better solution (passage under the railway near Brixton between Leeson Road and Somerleyton Road)
Relatively new and simple filtered permeability with bollards Clarence Way in Camden.... stops through motor traffic in its tracks but lets bikes and people through 🚲 😍
I love this - Dulwich has got a new village square out of what was formerly a traffic junction - three roads closed off to motor traffic – bei Dulwich Village
Here’s a new filter for motor traffic on Amelia Street, which has helped reduce motor traffic on the residential streets around Walworth - hard to show you the effects in a short video but you can see several people feeling able to amble in the road – bei Walworth
Quite a confusing layout for this new wand-segregated lane on Sail Street new Waterloo - bike symbols absolutely everywhere
Westminster Council’s changes to Regent Street are absolute rubbish - looks at first glance like a pop-up protected cycle lane but it’s not- they’ve deliberately closed the ends off so you can’t cycle on it. Now carriageway is even more horrible to cycle down than normal – bei 14-16 Regent Street
Sadly the new Hampstead Road segregated lane is also quite underwhelming - this is the best bit but it gives up for car parking and is currently only in one direction, dumps you on a massive road at both ends
Goods Way at King’s Cross (past Granary Square) is by contrast pretty good and connects quite nicely with other decent cycle routes – bei 5 Pancras Square
😻Best new thing ive seen today is on Red Lion Street - three simple new bollards filtering out through motor traffic and making it a quiet street to cycle on – bei Red Lion Street
Nice new road closure on Comber Grove, Camberwell - not only calms the street and makes it a nice route for cycling and walking but reduces noise and air pollution outside a school too
Here’s another simple bollard closure on the excellently named Bird In Bush Road, also outside a school
This is so good, it’s an absolute gamechanger: Peckham Rye Lane has been filtered and it’s an absolute dream to walk or cycle down – bei Peckham Plex
Peckham Rye Lane used to look like this (via Streetview)
This is an attractive way to close a road! Tavistock Street in Westminster
Road closures in Soho for outside tables - here’s Old Compton Street. Surely had to be permanent, it’s really lovely
In Wandsworth: Northcote Road and some of its side streets, free of motor traffic (just heard a small child run around happily shouting ‘no cars on the road! no cars on the road!’
Actually can’t get enough of this one, it’s a huge closure and so many people are out enjoying it in so many different ways
In the Northcote Road closure motor traffic can still cross at junctions where the side-street hasn’t been closed, they’ve mostly been treated like this
Nearby Old York Road by Wandsworth Town station has had motor traffic removed and people are mostly using it to have a peaceful coffee
This was a surprise - a new motor traffic filter on Alberta Street near Walworth. It runs parallel to the A3 and is part of a nice quiet backstreet route for getting from Brixton/Oval/Stockwell to Elephant and beyond
Windmill Drive across Clapham Common has been closed to through motor traffic - hard to see why it was ever open anyway given it is part of a park! – bei Clapham Common
Only stood here for a minute but you can see how many motorists use(d) the park as a shortcut. Many still haven’t got the message - some are turning around but others turn criminal and push through
This is nowhere near finished, so don’t come down to ride it – but workers are installing proper segregation on CS7 near Southwark Bridge - there are some sections of wands but these are full cast concrete kerbs
Here’s a very short completed section of protected lane on Southwark Bridge Road (that currently leads to a horrible busy road at either end)
A bit of the CS7 route that’s been upgraded with wands for protection - you can see the problem with the unprotected bit at the end of the video....
Looks like construction is well underway on the protected cycle tracks on Bloomsbury St/Gower St @camdencyclists - not open yet, but runs parallel to Tottenham Court Road, will be a really useful north-south route through the west end when it’s done – bei British Museum
One disappointing design compromise with this lane on Gower Street is that the council appears to have put loading bays in it - so you’ll still have to swerve out into traffic 🤔
I think this paint-only cycle lane on Portland Place is new.... essentially zero effort put into the design of this one, if you use it watch out for parked cars cutting across the lane. 😅 It is at least quite wide. There were once plans to protected tracks on this street
Here’s the famous new Euston Road cycle lane - it’s wide, though fairly short, running from Warren St Junction to Judd St. the other direction will be built soon. As you can see motor traffic was moving fine when I got here. Unusually TfL says this one def won’t be permanent – bei London Euston Railway Station (EUS)
My review of the Euston road cycle lane is: it was unthinkable to be cycling here a few weeks ago, and now it’s definitely an option! Some of the stuff like junctions could be done better and it’s quite a short link, though while you’re on it it’s alright
A nice new simple closure to motor traffic on Prowse Place in Camden - makes the backstreets around here quieter for walking and cycling
The protected cycle lanes on Prince of Wales Road are taking shape - I don’t think it’s actually open yet as this was the only rideable bit
This bit on PoW road looks open but I’m desperately hoping it isn’t the final design because it’s basically a slalom... and yet those build-outs look worrying new? 👀 @AdamDKHarrison any idea? – bei Zabludowicz Collection
I’m hoping it’s because the lane on this side of the road is a late addition to the scheme post-Covid and there are plans to rework it 🤞
Huge new bollard filter on Wilmot Place in Camden - the residential streets beyond are tranquil and very pleasant
Here’s a rebuilt cycle filter at the end of St Augustine’s Road connecting to a new short protected cycle lane on Camden Park Road - very nicely done
Islington has added a bunch of filters to the St Peter’s area to make it a low traffic neighbourhood, it’s quite chilled out - here’s one at Colebrooke Row
And more filtering on the bridge over the Regents Canal at Danbury Street
Reed’s Place in Kentish Town is a nice example of one way you can use street space if you remove cars long-term
Just thought I’d check to see if anyone was using the cycleway at Blackfriars/embankment - this is pretty normal these days – bei Blackfriars Bridge
