when angela davis encouraged us to imagine justice outside of retributive justice, saying that the impulse towards vengeance is a state impulse, and that we can and should imagine justice outside of hurting the person who harmed us
and when @sheabutterfemme said that to be an abolitionist is to know the difference between accountability and punishment, to not conflate the two, and urged us to find & hold our people (& to ask why some people don't have people) because that's where accountability starts
and when @dereckapurnell called herself a baby abolitionist and angela davis hesitated to talk first because she wanted to learn from the others and @sheabutterfemme said "we maintain discipline in our rooms as we run our fingers over book pages"
which is all to say: this moment is urgent, yes, but the world is exploding with brilliant, humble, thoughtful abolitionists who have been thinking these questions for so long and are generous enough to guide us thru this
