Angela Davis just said white people can’t even spell “historical responsibility” and that’s that on that.
And that the twinned absences of historical responsibility + historical consciousness and resultant amnesia is what locks us into cycles of calling for reform over and over again — for more humane forms of violence — despite the glaring evidence that they cannot work!
Abolition needs an anti-capitalist, feminist, and INTERNATIONALIST framework, Dr. Davis says. So for folks who keep asking if we can call “abolition” something else, you can call your little program whatever you’d like but if it’s not these things it’s not abolition. That’s it.
“If we want to develop an intersectional feminism, the trans community is showing us the way.”

She said that the trans community taught us to “effectively challenge that which is considered the very foundation of our sense of normalcy” (ie the gender binary)
I’m in tears as she describes how punitive logics of racial capitalism have infiltrated our emotional landscapes and push us towards wanting to harm in response to being harmed. This made my stomach lurch, this is my very worst habit/inclination. We can, must be more imaginative.
She’s talking about unity in the black community as a nationalism that is obsolete — a masculinist framing around cishetero black men, and maybe includes cis black women as an afterthought. She offers, instead, a “black radical unity.”
And @dereckapurnell picks this up brilliantly by describing how the state (and particularly politicized black people) deliberately contrives a “black unity” in the name of “quell[ing] dissent and repression.” Whose unity? WHO is community?
“We learn interdependence from disabled comrades, mutual aid from our queer comrades... intersectionality shows us that these are the same comrades”
