salt, nacl, a thread
salt is found in many processed foods, which is one of the reasons it has a bad rap. this is also due to a shift in thinking during the 20th century, probably caused by companies pushing pharmaceuticals, who wanted you to be salt-deficient.
most salts contain iodine, a necessary mineral. an iodine deficiency causes serious hormonal issues and digestive issues. some salts, like morton table salt and others, are fluoridated. avoid those at all costs.
salt is related to the sea, very powerful. it is referenced in the bible many times. ancient roman soldiers were paid in salt, where the phrase "worth his salt" come from, due to its value
the many types include table salt, kosher salt, himalayan salt, celtic sea salt, and the more obscure alaea, black lava, fleur de sel, sugpo asin, and kala namak. all have differnt bemefits and uses, some known, some not.
great ray peat article on salt: http://raypeat.com/articles/articles/salt.shtml
women crave salty foods during ovulation and during pregnancy, seawater is commonly used to treat wounds, salt is used to cure meats, and is used in cuisine all over the world.
effects of increased sodium are that it improves immunity, reduces vascular leakiness, and alleviates inflammation, protecting against cancer, alzheimer's, and other degenerative diseases. sodium is thermogenic and inherently anti-inflammatory.
more sodium leads to better sleep, less disease, and better hormone production in your body. you especially need more sodium if you drink lots of coffee or tea. try salting your coffee, the sodium also helps absorption of magnesium.
I am not promoting sodium supplements, just eat more salt, and eat natural, homegrown foods. salt is easy to add to almost all recipes, kimchi, soup, meat. when you want to splurge, homemade salted pretzels are delicious
