Small thread. 10 years ago, while in Washington, DC, I met a few brilliant compatriots, mostly from underprivileged neighborhoods, who had been invited by the Obama administration for a mega-summit for "Young Muslim entrepreneurs". 1/3 https://twitter.com/tudoralexis1/status/1271762405027127296
They said they resented being selected as Muslims, rather than French, and bundled together with people from 60 countries on the basis of religion. But they loved being given opportunity as entrepreneurs, something the Republic had failed to do. Much was said in 2 sentences. 2/3
This has remained with me ever since. We should never give up on our view of universalism, wich underpins our Republic. But we should never hide behind it to ignore the reality of racism and discrimination in our society, and fail to address it. 3/3
