Thread 1/ I saw someone tweet earlier that “we will be the only country to have a civil war over a civil war” and that really resonated. I started watching French Revolution documentaries tonight to know what to anticipate next (hint: there’s a lot of “terror” involved)
2/ but really I wanted to marinate in why things are the way they are right now and come up with possible solutions- an extraordinary measure. Not an easy feat. I think I understand some of the problems and a multi tiered solution.
3/ Besides the “inequality” issue- that’s been beat up so badly lately, and we are seeing from a purely emotional stance that has no founding data to support- but I’ll leave that alone. The bigger problem I see is lack of self worth or purpose combined with entitlement.
4/ I was lucky enough to leave college & join the military. I found a sense of purpose that I didn’t even know I was missing, and evolved my love for my nation in the process. I see that missing in the people desecrating our streets and I can’t help but think it isn’t just there.
5/ the saying “hard times leads to hard men, hard men leads to easy times, easy times leads to soft men, soft men leads to hard times” is never more evident than this very moment in our history. We are seeing the generations with the most war casualties slip to old age.
6/ Their grandkids neither know of hardship or sacrifice. That’s okay though. They wanted them to have easy times (& they certainly earned that reward for you all), but we are at a precipice. Boredom and lack of confidence/worth has kids searching for problems that don’t exist.
7/ Like many other nations we should adopt a particular policy. One that provides direction, one completed by all- leveling the playing field, one that ensures the learning of responsibility and skills (but mostly purpose and worth) for our future youth.
8/ We need 2 year mandatory civil service, and like yesterday. This shouldn’t just be limited to military. Let’s open it up to social services, federal orgs, humanitarian missions, LEO, medical services, etc. A 2 year mandatory commitment for ALL 18 year olds (no exceptions)..
Kids with disabilities can be accommodated with civil service that’s compatible, kids that show high intelligence like in STEM fields could do theres with orgs like NASA or FBI, etc. Make the pay a flat annual median across the board- no matter which institute they go to.
The wider range of options the better. Teach them self sustainment and give them a vector. We would end sliding retention rates in these areas with kids who stayed, and we would build their resumes and give them a better chance to enter the real world with purpose.
But mostly- this would stop the insanity we are seeing as a collective. I’m sure some would relent or fail after their service, but most would find comradery in their groups and figure out basic life necessities on their own without any sort of dependency. Our country needs this.
