I am not clapping for Schools of Nursing who write statements of solidarity with BIPOC. I want to see action. We can start by removing Florence Nightingale as the end-all-be-all of our profession. Decenter eurocentrism from our academic and healthcare institutions NOW.
Show me what you are doing to support your black faculty. Show me what you are doing to provide spaces for them to thrive in their academic career. What kind of mentorship opportunities are you providing for your black students?
Who are we citing as knowers of knowledge in nursing? Who are we centering as nursing leaders? Nursing faculty across the country fail to represent their student or patient population.
Where is any mention of Mary Seacole, Edith Anderson Monture? Where is the acknowledgement of the systemic barriers these identities faced in being recognized as nursing leaders?
