and since today is suga's birthday here is an appreciation thread on why the existence of sugawara koushi is one of the best things that has ever happened to karasuno !! !
sugawara Was their starting setter, but he was eventually replaced by kageyama. he wanted to play with his team more, but he was mature enough to assure coach ukai that if he thinks kageyama is more essential to winning, he would gladly give up his spot in the starting lineup.
he was saddened as a third-year who wanted to spend more time playing with his teammates, but he didnt gave up. he constantly tried to improve. he maximizes his time in the bench by observing their opponents and strategizing how they could exploit the holes in their defense.
also: HE IS A SPLENDID SERVER. he may not have a nasty spike serve or a jump floater BUT his control is so scarily accurate and WE DO NOT TALK ABOUT IT ENOUGH.
his technical stats were relatively low (power: 2, jumping: 2, stamina: 2, intelligence/game sense: 4, technique: 4, speed: 2), but he has proven to be a key player when it comes to defense. Also: his limited playing time was never put to waste because he always pulls through!!!
technical abilities aside, we shouldnt ever forget how he contributed to the growth of the team (especially kageyama's) !!! he was a reliable vice-captain who ALWAYS boosted the team morale, and his dependability always did wonders.
it was koushi who made kageyama realize the importance of being establishing a good relationship between the setter and the spikers, and communication! he played a big factor in kageyama's transformation from being a self-centered king to being a decent king.
even oikawa was aware that he made a significant impact on kageyama's character. sugawara's influence on kageyama gave way to some really amazing plays. i
mean, it was literally him who made kageyama realize that he would be able to take advantage of hinata's amazing agility.
when they lost to seijoh in the interhigh prelims, koushi was reminded that he wasnt a starter, and his chances of getting a sports scholarship for college were very low. volleyball had nothing to offer for him anymore, so why should he still bother?
his response to this honestly made me tear up the first time i watched that episode.

he loved volleyball. maybe not as much as some of the volleyball-obsessed characters we know, but he loved the sport and his team all the same.
IN CONCLUSION: sugawara koushi deserves all the love this universe has to offer peRIOD.
if i had spelling or grammatical errors you are required to forgive me because sugawara says so (and i just typed this all without even pausing bec I NEED TO LET ALL MY FEELINGS OUT OK)
