Pretty cool that Chuck Wendig decided to play cop on the Internet Archive, so not only did they end their TEMPORARY unlimited lending program (the tweet you see going around) but the lawsuit his shit caused has put the ENTIRE archive in jeopardy. https://www.vice.com/en_us/article/5dzg8n/archiving-the-internet-archive-sued-by-publishers
Glad we can finally make the [rereads notes] Wayback Machine pay for its crimes.
And yeah, fairly compensate authors for their works. Agreed! But we’re in a pandemic and IA tried to do something different to help people. Their normal model (that they’ve reverted to) is lending out only as many e-books as physical copies they have. https://arstechnica.com/tech-policy/2020/06/publishers-sue-internet-archive-over-massive-digital-lending-program/
The program was supposed to end June 30th anyways. This only ends it two weeks early and maybe removes one of the most impressive collections of information we have. But god forbid the internet actually be useful.
