~ Disclaimer: During my process of writing this, I have absolutely no idea how long this is gonna be. I’ll be going over every moment they’ve had and how each one builds their relationship. I’ll also be looking into how they could be presented together in the future.
Whether you choose to view this as romantic or platonic, is completely up to you! I can’t possibly fit everything in one thread, so I’ll put the link to the next part at the bottom of each one. Hopefully, they’ll all be connected.
I love this ship to absolute death, so I’ve thought about these things a lot. They way I view them may be different from you. If there’s anything you wanna add, feel completely free to! Without further ado, let’s get into it! :D ~
First of all, we all know that before All Might offered to pass down OFA to Izuku, his life wasn’t exactly bright and cheery. Sure, seeing heroes in action would often put a smile on his face. But, after years of bullying and harsh reality - there was also a hint of darkness.
He might’ve still considered Bakugo a friend, but the feeling definitely wasn’t mutual. Bakugo put him down constantly, and his classmates humiliated him too. So, it’s safe to say Izuku didn’t have any real friends during school.
Fast forward through the sludge villian, months of hellish training, and accepting the power of OFA. We now bring ourselves to February 26th, the day of the UA Entrance Exam. As well as Izuku and Ochako’s first encounter.
Ochako uses her quirk to save Izuku from falling on his face. She says to him, “It’s a bad omen to trip and fall”. Being the nerd that he is, he easily gets flustered. At this point, it’s safe to say that he was at least physically attracted to her.
It goes a little deeper than that though. For those who don’t know, Uraraka’s name can translated as words like “beautiful”, “bright”, “cheery”, etc. In other words, a ray of sunshine.
Besides Inko and All Might, Ochako was probably the first person in a while to actually show care for him and wish him the best. She’s the light that would outshine the previous darkness that Izuku had. It probably meant a great deal to him.
There’s another little detail that we get from the light novel. We find out that Ochako was actually crazy nervous that day, and that seeing Izuku made her feel a lot better. Look at that. Them helping each other without them even knowing it.
Later, there’s a small scene where he spots her in the crowd and wants to thank her for earlier. He’s stopped by Iida of course, but we know that he more than makes up for missing this opportunity.
With the odds stacked against him and no points on the board, Izuku was terrified throughout the actual exam. But when he heard Ochako’s cry, he felt as though he had to do something. Honestly, she probably thought she was going to die. But, he remembered what she did for him.
As I see it, this action was a mix of his overwhelming desire to save people, along with his way of saying “Thank you for earlier”. This surely proved the point more than simply talking to her. Without knowing the consequences, he just jumped in.
With a broken arm and two broken legs, he plummeted towards the ground. He comes up with a last-ditch effort to try to survive, but Ochako saves him again with a slap to the face - activating her quirk. So, she saved him from falling two times!
Also, cute how Izuku literally has 3 broken limbs and he’s still more worried about her wellbeing.
Anyone who’s familiar with this ship knows that saving each other is a big thing with them. Hopefully, you’ll notice that as the thread goes on!
While everyone else seemed to just be in shock, Iida notices his will to save Uraraka. Saying, “He didn’t hesitate”, after we noticed Izuku’s legs being completely frozen for the majority of the exam.
The robot was worth no points, so Izuku goes home feeling like a failure with no hope of getting in UA. That is, until we get the behind-the-scenes of Ochako after the exam.
Ochako desperately tries to convince Mic to sacrifice her points to give to Izuku. During this, we get flashbacks of scenes of people putting him down for trying to act heroic. Now though, his heroic actions had actually gotten through to someone.
The rescue points are introduced, and both of them get accepted. We see now that the whole reason they got into UA was because of each other. He made sacrifices to save her, and she was willing to make sacrifices to repay him. And with that, the school year begins.
There are some cute moments, like Deku getting flustered and being attracted to her in her uniform. There’s that sunshine again! I’m not gonna focus on these type of moments a lot though.
After the Quirk Apprehension Test, we move on to Ochako using the nickname “Deku”. The nickname that was used to insult him for years, was seen in a completely different way to Ochako. It meant “Do your best!” or “You can do it!”. It’s pretty funny how fast he accepted the idea.
This theme is actually one of my favorites for the ship, and I’ll go more in depth later on when he officially chooses it as his hero name. He just seems flustered right now..
Now, we go to their first time working together against Bakugo and Iida. Ochako says things like “Must be fate!”, and encourages him that she’ll have his back since they’re a team.
