In my "Black Mirror & The Digital Self” class, we are watching “Smithereen” right now. I’ve been chewing on the ending, which showed a society being exposed to a news story of injustice and pain and then moving on with their lives.

So I asked a question couched in the moment.
I’m not sure the question captured everything I want to know, but I am asking it because I want them to think about the social conditions surrounding this moment vs. others in regards to how white people in particular are reacting.

My own answer is not optimistic. What’s yours?
(And I hope I’m wrong! But I think it’s important for white people doing the work right now to be aware of and critique what in this moment is enabling us to do activism, because there is a point at which it’s going to get hard and we will be tempted to stop.)
Following up on this thread: This piece ( https://nyti.ms/3g4Enda ) by @nhannahjones is excellent and worth your time, but the excerpt pictured below gets at why I was asking the question topthread.
