the current @nytimes ethicist is constantly promoting ableism. this week is unfortunately hardly the first time. a thread of receipts (don& #39;t click through if you will be sad or enraged)
he told a mom they could cut their disabled kid out of their life - https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/08/magazine/may-i-cut-my-daughter-out-of-my-life.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/0...
he downplayed the very real and serious issue of disability discrimination and invisible disabilities in academic workplaces - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/17/magazine/can-autism-make-me-a-diversity-hire.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2018/01/1...
he told an adult kid they could cut their disabled parents out of their life - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/30/magazine/what-do-i-owe-my-severely-disabled-parents.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/3...
he too often relies on law (e.g. ADA, the legal minimum) to give an answer rather than ethics about say disclosure or accommodation (the law isn& #39;t an arbiter of what& #39;s right!) - example - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/20/magazine/must-i-tell-my-boss-im-absent-because-of-mental-illness.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2018/03/2...
he chooses to include multiple Qs about people faking disability, even though the vast majority of people are not. this is harmful and perpetuates stereotypes about disabled people being liars or fakes example - https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/30/magazine/should-i-call-my-friend-out-for-her-service-dog-scam.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2016/11/3...
he gave a harmful answer about faculty writing rec letters for disabled students that implied it& #39;s OK not to write them b/c them being disabled could be grounds not to recommend them (no! don& #39;t do this AND do not disclose others& #39; disability) - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/30/magazine/what-do-i-owe-my-severely-disabled-parents.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2018/10/3...
he answered another that posits that a student with a learning disability is lying about their accommodation needs and cheating - https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/22/magazine/should-i-go-to-a-college-ive-been-admitted-to-as-a-legacy.html">https://www.nytimes.com/2018/05/2...
anyways, there are likely more. those are just the ones I remembered off the top of my head. he& #39;s been blocking disabled folks who are rightly calling him out, but he& #39;s not being maligned - this is a theme in the Qs he picks and what he replies.
#BlackDisabledLivesMatter - https://www.blackdisabledandproud.org/black-lives-matter.html">https://www.blackdisabledandproud.org/black-liv...
there& #39;s no disability justice without racial justice. @VilissaThompson created #DisabilityTooWhite to ensure conversations about disability don& #39;t continue to center whiteness https://rootedinrights.org/reflecting-on-the-impact-of-disabilitytoowhite/">https://rootedinrights.org/reflectin...
